The Seven Facts of Music | Jazz Piano Skills

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn jazz piano…you’re not alone.

Most players struggle not because they lack talent. Not because they lack effort.

They struggle because they lack

CLARITY.

They’re trying to piece music together from fragments:

  • chords over here

  • scales over there

  • licks somewhere else

…without ever seeing how it all connects.

And that’s exactly why this episode matters.

This week is different. Instead of adding more information, we step back, reset, and connect the dots using what I call:

👉 The Seven Facts of Music

The Seven Facts of Music

Why knowing them matters more than you think.

Every single concept you study in jazz—harmony, melody, improvisation, solo piano—

…fits inside a simple, logical framework.

When you understand that framework:

  • Practice becomes focused

  • Improvisation becomes logical

  • Playing becomes expressive

When you don’t…

👉 Everything feels complicated.

The 7 Facts of Music (The Big Picture)

Here they are:

  1. Music is the production of sound and silence

  2. Sound is produced harmonically and melodically

  3. Harmony = chords (voicings)

  4. Melody = scales and arpeggios

  5. Melody moves up or down

  6. We add tension (chromaticism)

  7. We bring it all to life with rhythm

That’s it.

Not 100 concepts. Not endless theory.

👉 Just 7 facts.

Fact #1: Sound and Silence

Most players focus only on notes.

More notes = better playing… right?

Wrong.

Silence is not the absence of music. 👉 Silence is music.

It creates:

  • space

  • phrasing

  • clarity

  • time

If you can’t control silence…you can’t control music.

Fact #2: Harmony and Melody Are the Same Thing

This is a BIG one.

Most players think:

  • chords = one thing

  • scales = something else

But in reality:

👉 Harmony and melody are the same sound in different forms

  • Harmony = frozen (chords)

  • Melody = flowing (lines)

Like:

  • ice and water

Same substance. Different form.

Fact #3: Chords Are Not Infinite

This might shock you.

Most players think: 👉 “There are endless voicings… I’ll never learn them all.”

Not true.

Music is a finite system. Which means: 👉 Voicings are organized, not endless.

At Jazz Piano Skills, we focus on:

  • Block chords

  • Traditional shells

  • Contemporary shells

  • Two-handed structures

Not random shapes.

👉 A system.

Fact #4: Melody Is Not Random

Every melodic line comes from:

  • arpeggios

  • scales

  • tension

That’s it.

And every note you play is doing one thing:

👉 Moving toward a target note

The real question is NOT: ❌ What scale do I use?

The real question is: ✅ Where am I going… and how do I get there?

Fact #5: Melody Only Moves Two Ways

Up or down.

That’s it.

Every phrase, Every line. Every idea.

👉 Up or down.

But here’s the key:

Direction becomes musical only when placed in harmony.

Fact #6: Jazz = Tension

If you only play “correct” notes…

You’ll sound correct.

And boring.

What makes jazz sound like jazz?

👉 Tension

  • chromatic notes

  • outside tones

  • color

And here’s the breakthrough:

👉 The 3rd contains everything

  • arpeggio

  • scale

  • tension

Even bigger:

👉 Every chord is built from stacked 3rds

If you master the 3rd, you master music.

Fact #7: Rhythm Is Not Math

This is where everything comes alive.

Most players learn rhythm visually:

  • counting (mathematically)

  • notation

  • grids

But music is not visual.

👉 It’s felt.

Every rhythm is simply:

  • downbeats

  • upbeats

That’s it.

If you can:

  • hear them

  • feel them

  • control them

👉 You can play rhythmically.

The Truth About Music (The Mic Drop)

Music is not complicated.

It is:

👉 Sound + Silence 👉 Organized into Shapes 👉 Moving with Direction 👉 Colored with Tension 👉 Expressed through Rhythm

That’s the entire system.

The Real Problem (And the Real Solution)

The struggle is NOT:

  • lack of talent

  • lack of effort

It is:

👉 lack of clarity

When music is fragmented, it feels impossible.

When music is unified…

👉 It becomes inevitable.

Your Next Step

Stop chasing more information.

Start understanding what you already know.

Because everything you need…

👉 is already in front of you.

Final Thought

And once you truly see these Seven Facts in the music you play.

Once you hear them.

Once you feel them.

Music will never look complicated again!

Instead, it will feel Natrural Connected Inevitable Personal

And that’s the moment…

When you stop chasing information and finally begin to understand it.
