Reflections on 2025 and the Four Pillars of Jazz Piano

As we arrive at the final Jazz Piano Skills episode of 2025, this moment feels different — and intentionally so. This episode wasn’t about a tune study, voicings, harmonic analysis, or improvisation development. It was about something more profound.

It was about pausing long enough to acknowledge how far we’ve come together as a community, and then looking ahead with clarity and purpose toward what’s next.

So as you read, imagine yourself settling in with your favorite beverage, taking a breath, and allowing yourself to close one musical chapter — while opening another.

2025: A Year of Growth

When I think back on 2025, one word continues to rise to the surface:

GROWTH

Growth musically. Growth educationally.

And most importantly,

Growth as a community.

This past year, we explored deeper harmonic concepts, more intentional improvisational strategies, and thoughtful ways to approach jazz standards. But what stood out most wasn’t the material — it was you.

Week after week and month after month You showed up.

You practiced. You wrestled with challenging ideas. You asked insightful questions in masterclasses and weekly Q&A segments.

And perhaps most importantly,

You trusted the process — even when the process felt uncomfortable.

That’s where real musical growth lives.

Jazz Piano Skills Is Not About Shortcuts

There’s something I want to say clearly — and I know many of you already know this.

Jazz Piano Skills is not about shortcuts.

And in a world that often prioritizes speed over depth, that’s intentional.

This community is built on understanding harmony, developing a strong musical foundation, and learning how to think about music — not just play it. Over the past year, I watched so many of you begin to trust your ears, your instincts, and your musical voice.

Whether you’re new to jazz or have been playing for decades, you are exactly where you need to be — and you are moving forward.

Harmony: The Spine of the Music

Throughout 2025, we revisited the Seven Facts of Music in every episode. But if there’s one truth I want to lock in as a defining takeaway from this year, it’s this:

Harmony is everything.

Harmony is not chord symbols on a page. Harmony is gravity.

It’s the force that gives music direction — telling melody where it can go, what it can lean on, what it can resist, and how it resolves. Without harmony, notes are just notes. With harmony, notes have meaning.

Harmony isn’t an add-on skill. It's not a chapter in the middle of the book.

Harmony is the spine of the entire musical story.

Strong harmony creates a strong melody. Strong melody creates strong improvisation.

Melody isn’t random — it’s harmony spoken in single notes. When you understand harmony, melody stops being guesswork and starts becoming inevitable. You don’t wonder which notes might work — you hear which notes belong.

Improvisation: From Survival to Conversation

Improvisation isn’t a magic trick. Its composition happening in real time.

Without harmonic understanding, improvisation often turns into one of two things:

  • Running memorized patterns

  • Hoping not to land on the wrong note

But when harmony is clear, everything changes.

You stop playing over the changes and start shaping them. You hear cadences before they arrive. You create tension and release intentionally. Improvisation transforms from survival into conversation.

And good conversation always contains emotion.

Emotion doesn’t start in the fingers! It begins with harmonic awareness.

Harmony creates longing. Harmony creates relief. Harmony creates surprise.

Looking Ahead to 2026: The Four Pillars of Jazz Piano

As we move into 2026, we’re introducing more precise language to describe what we’ve been building all along:

The Four Pillars of Jazz Piano

These aren’t new ideas — they’re a more transparent framework. And clear language leads to clear thinking. Clear thinking leads to better practice. Better practice leads to better music.

Pillar One: Harmonic Architecture

Everything begins with harmony. This pillar focuses on harmonic function, chord movement, and voicing structures. It answers the question:

Where are we, and where are we going?

Pillar Two: Melodic Design

Melody reveals harmony. This pillar focuses on learning melodies, phrasing, fingerings, and expressive treatments. It answers the question:

How does the harmony sing?

Pillar Three: Improvisation Development

Improvisation is structured creativity. This pillar focuses on developing ideas, creating tension and release, and telling a musical story. It answers the question:

How do I create in the moment with intention?

Pillar Four: Solo Piano Interpretation

This is the new addition — and an important one. Solo piano integrates everything: harmony, melody, rhythm, form, and expression. There’s nowhere to hide — but complete freedom. It answers the question:

How do I make the tune come alive on my own?

Each month in 2026, every tune study will explore all four pillars, creating a complete and connected approach to jazz piano.

Why This Matters

The Four Pillars of Jazz Piano reflect how jazz piano should be studied — not as isolated tricks or shortcuts, but as a connected system.

When these four pillars improve, everything improves. Your ears. Your hands. Your confidence. Your clarity.

Your playing becomes simpler — but deeper.

The goal isn’t to play more notes! It's to play with meaning.

Gratitude and What’s Ahead

To every Jazz Piano Skills member and listener — thank you.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for practicing. Thank you for trusting the process.

Jazz piano isn’t something you master quickly — it’s something you grow into. And in 2025, I’ve seen growth everywhere: in understanding, in confidence, and in how you hear and think about music.

As you close out this year, take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come. Celebrate your progress. Honor the work you’ve put in. And then get excited! Because the music ahead is meaningful, intentional, and full of possibility.

From my heart to yours — thank you for being the best part of Jazz Piano Skills. I wish you a joyful, healthy, and music-filled new year.

And I can’t wait to discover, learn, and play jazz piano with you in 2026. 🎧 Listen Now: [Jazz Piano Skills Podcast: "Christmas Time is Here” – Episode] 📝 Become a Member: JazzPianoSkills.com 📺 Subscribe on YouTube: Jazz Piano Skills
